Before the opening of New Road travelers approaching Mauchline from Kilmarnock had to go to the right of Netherplace Lodge passed Netherplace House and onto Back Causeway (Castle Street) to reach the Cross

Mauchline castle, also known as Abbot Hunters Tower, is on the left here. It was erected around 1450 and was possibly used by the monks of Melrose Abbey. The house on the right belonged to Gavin Hamilton who was a close friend of Robert Burns

Mauchline churchyard is final resting place for four of Robert Burns's family and many of his friends and acquaintances.

Coming in from the East this old photo was taken from the hill top and shows Mauchline school on the right. The school has since been extended and more houses have been built.

The old Howford bridge used to be the main road south out of Mauchline until the opening of the new bridge on 28 September 1962. The bridge can still be crossed and is a favourite place for locals to have a picnic.
