The two pictures above show many differences. The small house, Netherplace Lodge, is the
gate house into Netherplace Estate which is locally known as "Burrs Wood"

Looking down New Road towards the Cross

An early and present view of New Road looking towards the Cross and Earl Grey Street show
a number of gap sites where original buildings have been redeveloped and replaced by modern
buildings. In the old picture the white building on the left is where the Toll Bar was located,
now the site of the fire station, as this was the main entrance to the town from the North.
The next two double storey buildings were the office and showrooms of box makers W & A Smith.
Snuff boxes and wooden souvenirs were made here from the 1830s to 1933 and were more commonly
known as Mauchline Ware.
