Mauchline Cross
Looking towards Kilmarnock Road

On the right of the old photo, taken at the turn of the century, is the 18th century building known as "The Place". It was built in 1756 and reputedly was at one time the residence of two ladies from the House of Eglington. It fell into a poor state of repair and was finaly demolished in the 1930s. The photo on the right shows "The Place" is now occupied by the new development of Library, Local Office and residential flats, completed in the winter of 1996. This new development replaces the former Post Office and Sorting Office which was surplus to requirements when the new Sorting Office opened in Cumnock.

Looking towards Cumnock Road

The view of Mauchline Cross looking towards Earl Grey Street was taken in the 1880s. Opposite "The Place", on the left, were the premises of Hunter Brothers, Provision Merchants. A printing works can be seen on the extreme right of the photograph. This building dates back to the 17th century and it is said that five Covenanters were hanged from here in 1685. Their monument can be found at Mauchline school. On the right hand photo alterations and additions to the former printing works building have dramatically altered the appearance of this view.

Taken from the Bank Corner

Many thanks to Mark Pogue from Kent in Washington,USA for sending me this rare photo of Mauchline cross. It must have been taken in the late 1800's and shows a lot of changes in the way the street looks now. The main changes is the white building on the left which is the Kilmarnock Supporters Club and the building at the cross on the old photo which was known as "The Place"
